You can join ESNZ and become involved in Equestrian sports in a number of ways not just as a competitor or spectator.

If you are passionate about about Equestrian Sports why not become an ESNZ Official. This is a great way to follow your sport, give something back to your equestrian community and meet new people.

Course Designers


To officiate in any discipline you must be a Full member of  ESNZ and attend discipline officials seminars once every three years.

Which role is for me?

Some of the options open to you are explained below:


Judging is a rewarding way to get involved with equestrian sports. They are vital to the sport and growth of participation in New Zealand. Judges are registered through ESNZ and can progress from grassroots level up to FEI level which allows you to officiate international competition.


A steward is tasked with the responsibility of interpreting and enforcing the rules of ESNZ at horse shows. Ensuring horse welfare is a big part of this role. There are also opportunities to steward up to FEI level with the right training and qualifications achieved while stewarding in New Zealand.

Technical Delegate

A Technical Delegate is responsible for the technical safety and successful running of the Event. In practice, he/she will liaise closely with Organisers, Officials and Competitors to ensure that all aspects of the competition comply with the ESNZ Eventing Rules.

Course Designer

If you enjoy challenging people this is the role for you. Course designers build the courses competitors compete on in either Eventing or Jumping. This is a varied role which is good for a problem solving individual.

Clean Sport Tester

If you are interested in keeping Equestrian clean in New Zealand this role could be what you’re looking for. These individuals carry out clean sport testing on Equines throughout New Zealand along side Vets. You receive comprehensive training and support from ESNZ Clean Sport when becoming a listed Clean Sport tester.
